The 2021 BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards acknowledges not only naval architecture and styling but also design and technology aspects that represent innovation, engineering and sustainability amid the changing demands of yacht owners.
In the most intricately quantitative category, BOAT International awarded Reichel/Pugh with a special Judges’ Commendations for the exceptional naval architecture of the REICHEL/PUGH-NAUTA 100 MORGANA. The selection was based on "a performance calculation total... and on the work shown for design refinement via CFD, plus tank and wind tunnel testing by naval architects Reichel/Pugh and builder Southern Wind." Reichel/Pugh President Jim Pugh commented that, "the Reichel/Pugh team is humbled by this honor and wishes to thank the owner for making this possible and of course the fantastic team effort by all involved in the design and build."

The Reichel/Pugh team were responsible for the naval architecture, including hull, appendage design and sail plan development of the Morgana, Nauta Design of Milan created the general concept, exterior and interior design, and Southern Wind was selected as builders based on their years of experience in the construction of performance blue-water cruisers in the 90-120’ range.
The REICHEL/PUGH-NAUTA 100 is characterized by a strong focus on performance. Her light displacement combined with a powerful sail plan makes for excellent speed in light wind conditions. The hull’s inner and outer skins are in full carbon with a Corecell core while Nomex and prepreg are used for the fore and side decks, the aft cockpit and the fore and aft bulkheads. This lightweight construction method optimizes weight and increases performance and comfort. Morgana also features a lifting keel (4 to 6.1m), a single rudder, a Hybrid HR40 carbon mast and EC6+ rigging, transversal jib tracks and a removable racing bowsprit amongst other performance enhancing features.

Notably, Reichel/Pugh’s 130’ superyacht My Song won the International Superyacht Society’s 2017 award for the Best Sailing Yacht between 24m and 40m, the BOAT International World Superyacht Awards Sailing Yacht of The Year for 30m and 39.9m and at the Showboats Design Awards in which she was voted Most Innovative Sailing Yacht and took the Best Exterior Design and Styling award. The 220’ Hetairos, with naval architecture by Reichel/Pugh, won a judges' special award during the 2012 World Superyacht Awards for the “Notable contribution to the technical advancement of sailing superyachts.” She is considered the world’s most spectacular ketch.
Reichel/Pugh Senior Naval Architect Tony Beale, who coordinated the Morgana project throughout the design and build, explained that, “The hull, sail plan, and appendages of the RP-Nauta 100 benefit from the combined research and development of recent R/P superyachts. Morgana features a powerful hull-form when heeled and a narrow upright waterline which provides stability and power while reaching and sailing upwind in addition to great light air performance. This yacht will deliver an exceptional sailing experience while cruising and at superyacht regattas.”

Launched in Cape Town in October 2020 the REICHEL/PUGH-NAUTA 100 Morgana was commissioned by an experienced and passionate yachtsman who was looking for a fast bluewater cruiser to sail comfortably around the world while also competing in the most renowned superyacht regattas. The Reichel/Pugh team is very pleased to have collaborated once more with Nauta Design and Southern Wind Shipyard to deliver this stunning yacht. She made her European sailing debut at the SWS Rendezvous and Trophy, held last month in Porto Cervo and coinciding with the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta.
You can take the opportunity to visit her at the MONACO YACHT SHOW September 22-25, 2021.
