Reichel/Pugh-designed 100’ Superyacht Galateia wins 2023 PalmaVela Regatta for Second Year in a Row, R/P 100’ Superyacht Magic Carpet 3 second, R/P 84' Vera third, R/P 100' Superyacht Morgana fifth.
Reichel/Pugh-designed 100’ Superyacht Galateia wins 2023 PalmaVela Regatta for Second Year in a Row, R/P 100’ Superyacht Magic Carpet3 second, R/P 84' Vera third, R/P 100' Superyacht Morgana fifth.
The PalmaVela Regatta, held at Real Club Náutico de Palma, Spain, is the opening event of the International Maxi Association’s 2023 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge. The Reichel/Pugh-designed 100’ Superyacht Galateia has now won the 2023 PalmaVela Regatta for the second year in a row.

Of the nine maxis racing, the two largest yachts the R/P 100' Magic Carpet3 and R/P 100' Galateia were both designed by Reichel/Pugh and are principal rivals. Galateia, co-owned by David M. Leuschen and Chris Flowers, was the victor, winning her class and also the trophy for the best placed IMA member. "The crew did a masterful job,” commented Leuschen. Magic Carpet3 finished second overall and prevented Galateia from achieving a perfect scoreline by winning Friday’s second windward-leeward race. In the 2022 edition, Galateia had a "perfect scoreline" of six wins in six starts.

Reichel/Pugh Senior Naval Architect Tony Beale is also a member of Galateia’s successful racing team. After winning the 2023 Palmavela event this week, Tony commented that, “we are really delighted with the success of Galateia at this regatta. We continue to see improvement in the performance through the way the team sails and development of the boat. Winning the Palmavela two years in a row in very different conditions is a great accomplishment!”

A primary goal of R/P is to develop designs that have longevity and continue winning many seasons after launching. For the design of Galateia, “we developed the next generation Wallycento hull shape incorporating into the design the on-the-water experiences from Magic Carpet3,” explains Reichel/Pugh President Jim Pugh. “All areas of the design were open for development with focus on hull development and on improving the underwater foil package, reducing windage and improving the yacht’s systems and function. In tandem the R/P engineering team set a new paradigm for the cutting edge in composite structural design by improving stiffness and strength, while lowering the VCG and improving the ballast ratio. A critical emphasis was placed on providing a responsive and rewarding experience for the helmsperson. Hull and appendage hydrodynamics, perfected rig positioning and a structure optimized for strength and stiffness provide a reassuring feeling of stability and control especially in more arduous wind and sea conditions.”

Despite having not ventured out on the racecourse since her outstanding 2019 season when she was the IMA's Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Champion, Miguel Galuccio's Reichel/Pugh 84' Performance Cruiser Vera proved that she has lost none of her potential. The 84’ Vera finished third overall to Galateia and Magic Carpet3 in the Maxi A class. The Reichel/Pugh-designed and recently launched Reichel/Pugh-Nauta 100’ Performance Cruiser Morgana built by Southern Wind was fifth. In 2021, BOAT International awarded Reichel/Pugh with a special Judges’ Commendations for the Exceptional Naval Architecture of the REICHEL/PUGH-NAUTA 100 Morgana.
The 84’ Performance Cruiser Vera, originally My Song has been earning podium finishes since 2012, winning her class at the 2013 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, 2014 Les Voiles De Saint-Tropez, 2015 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, 2016 Maxi Rolex Cup. Under Miguel Galuccio's ownership Vera won the 2019 Palermo-Montecarlo and 151 Miglia Trofeo Cetilar races and was 1st overall for the 2019 Meditteranean Maxi Offshore Challenge. My Song/Vera, R/P Design No. 85 with interior and exterior design by Nauta Yachts was built by Cookson Boats and launched in 1999.

Magic Carpet3 was the 2014 Overall Winner (winning three of five regattas) of the Wally Championship, won the 2014/2015/2016 & 2022 Giraglia Races, won the 2015 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, 2015 PalmaVala, 2015/2021 Les Voiles de St Tropez, 2017 & 2018 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, and won the 2021 Maxi Worlds.

Galateia won the 2017 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (2nd in 2022) and was the 2017 Wally Class Season’s Championship. She has started a strong campaign for the 2023 IMA Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.
