TURNER’S DREAM COMES ALIVE ...AGAIN!! Reichel/Pugh Design No. 162 66' Canting Ballast Alive, owned by Philip Turner and skippered by Duncan Hine, was awarded the coveted Tattersall Cup, as the overall WINNER of the 2023 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race with the best corrected time under IRC. The result also seals a terrific performance for Reichel/Pugh in the race with the Reichel/Pugh 72' URM Group finishing third over the line for second overall, Reichel/Pugh 69’ Moneypenny taking third place overall, and Reichel/Pugh 40’ Chutzpah 3rd in IRC Div. 2.
1st Overall - 2023 Sydney Hobart - Reichel/Pugh Design No. 162 66' Alive
2nd Overall - 2023 Sydney Hobart - Reichel/Pugh 72' URM Group
3rd Overall - 2023 Sydney Hobart - Reichel/Pugh 69’ Moneypenny
3rd IRC Div. 2 - 2023 Sydney Hobart - Reichel/Pugh 40’ Chutzpah
The result also seals a terrific performance for Reichel/Pugh in the race, as the top three overall came from their design board with Reichel/Pugh 72' URM Group finishing third over the line for second overall and Reichel/Pugh 69’ Moneypenny taking third place overall. Reichel/Pugh 40’ Chutzpah was 3rd in IRC Div. 2. “Reichel/Pugh designs are proving to be pretty lucky for many of these races,” Hine said.
TURNER’S DREAM COMES ALIVE ...AGAIN!! Reichel/Pugh Design No. 162 66' Canting Ballast Alive was the fourth yacht to cross the finish line — ending with a time of 2 days, 2 hours, 19 minutes and 4 seconds. She becomes the second Tasmanian yacht to win dual Tattersalls Cups, joining Westward, which won back-to-back Sydney to Hobart races in 1947 and 1948. The Tattersall Cup is a symbol of supremacy in one of the toughest races in the world.

Hine wrote to say, “The Reichel/Pughs dominated the fleet yet again! Congrats on an incredibly long-lived design. The Studio should be proud.” This is the Tasmanian boat’s second victory in five years; Hine skippered Phillip Turner’s Reichel/Pugh 66 to her first victory in 2018.
In the Overall 2023/24 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore Standings, URM Group entered the Hobart Race 1st Overall IRC following a win at the Solas Big Boat Challenge. Speaking before it was confirmed that Alive beat URM Group overall, Alive Navigator Adrienne Cahalan added: “URM Group navigator Alice Parker has really done a great job. We don’t know who’s the best of the two boats, but even if they’ve lost, it’s by a whisker.” Cahalan agreed that Parker’s progression as a leading navigator delivers a strong message to women who may be interested in ocean racing to consider doing so as a navigator.

On the most difficult part of the race, Alive’s crewmember Gavin Brady said, “The competition with URM was the hardest. To stay close enough to them was so important. We swapped places a few times. They got away from us last night and elongated the distance and then we caught them up at 6am this morning.” “What a team,” he said of URM Group, skippered by Marcus Ashley-Jones. “They pushed us hard, they are solid. We just knew we had to stay with them. It was relentless.”

Alive was commissioned by SDYC member Jim Madden, built by Westerly Marine and launched in 2006 as Stark Raving Mad III, later to be renamed Black Jack. Black Jack was third overall & 1st overall ORCi in the 2012 Sydney-Hobart.
After Philip Turner purchased the boat 2014 and rechristened her Alive, she continued this winning legacy. In 2019, Alive was Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race ORCi Overall winner, winning IRC Division 0 & ORCi Division 1.
In 2018, Alive won the George Adams Tattersall Cup for the Sydney-Hobart Overall Winner on IRC and the Charleston Trophy for Overall Winner on ORCi in the 2018 Sydney Hobart. Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design was awarded the 2018 Alan Payne Memorial Trophy – for the designer of the overall winner on handicap.

Alive swept 2019 California Offshore races with back-to-back line honor wins in the SoCal 300 (Santa Barbara to San Diego), the Spinnaker Cup (San Francisco Bay to Monterey), the Coastal Cup (Monterey to Santa Barbara), and the Newport-Ensenada Race. She also set a new course record for the 200nm Coastal Cup of 13:48:28.
Turner finished second over the line and third overall in the 2017 Brisbane Gladstone Race and third over the line in the subsequent Brisbane to Keppel race. Alive won the 2016 Brisbane Keppel race, placing third over the line to Super-maxis Wild Oats XI and Black Jack 100. She broke the 2014 Melbourne Vanuatu record, took line honors and won IRC Division 0 in the 2015 Hong Kong Vietnam Race, and then broke the 16-year-old Rolex China Sea Race record in 2016.
