Reichel/Pugh enters the MAXI-CAT space with a groundbreaking new design for Advanced Italian Yachts – the AC72.
“I want our designs to be known for both their performance and elegance twenty years from now,” reflects Reichel/Pugh President Jim Pugh. The AC72 is the embodiment of made-in-Italy luxury, craftsmanship and state-of-the-art performance. A true “maxi-cat” with all the elegance, refinement and innovation found on Italian Advanced Yachts.
Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design, in business for over forty years, has an unmatched reputation as leaders in sailing innovation, with a depth of design experience and engineering resources that have produced scores of revolutionary designs. The studio is thrilled to partner with Advanced Yachts, Cassetta Design and project manager Trimarine SRL to thoughtfully design the AC72 and deliver a fantastic new type of cruising experience to owners. We see this as a special project within the catamaran cruising/performance market, one that can clearly excel.

Race-winning performance is part of Advanced DNA, however exploring the shallow-draft tropics is another key capability of the AC72. Blending these two requirements, innovative centerboards are fitted to provide shallow draft freedom, with no compromise on manageability of propulsion, steering and sail handling. The yacht is the perfect exploration vessel for sailors of all skill levels, with or without crew.

The 72ft cruising cat includes an expansive saloon unmatched in large cruising catamarans, an “aft beach” stretching the full 10-metres beam, and a forward cockpit to enjoy private relaxation. A careful modelling process allowed for 360-degree visualization from the saloon seats, confirming pleasant and natural light in all areas to make the yacht inviting and atmospheric. Indoor/outdoor living is delivered in true Italian fashion through the broadest possible 3-section saloon doors. A reimagined flybridge allows the helmsman, family, and guests to engage in the sailing and social time altogether.

- The robust power-to-weight ratio not only provides the speed to excite at regattas, but comes with the stability needed to stay safe and relaxed while undertaking long ocean miles and shorthanded sailing.
- The chined hull lines have been optimized to reduce drag while supporting the spacious interior living spaces.
- The hull rocker and bow shape ensure good maneuverability while providing valuable reserve buoyancy.
- The sheerline and stem profile are shaped to reduce weight and windage.
- A crucial feature of the naval architecture is the variable draft provided by the centreboard systems. This delivers the upwind pointing ability all sailors value dearly, with the shallow draft capability to grant access to entire regions of the world that are otherwise impossible to reach and impractical for a monohull. Fused deployment actuation provides enhance safety over a dagger board design. Multiple deployment angles allow for reducing helm loads when reaching. The center case protects the shaftline and rudder from damage from underwater debris.
- A self-tacking headsail ensures easy sail handling. Powerful reaching and running flying sails.
- Twin flybridge helm stations provide superior visibility and ultimate helm experience.
- Foam cored construction with carbon fiber in high load regions and throughout the cabin top reduces lightship weight to ensure a great payload capacity.
The team is waiting for the launch of hull #1 with great anticipation!
